Great Chemistry Leads to Construction JobRohm and Haas

Meldrum Construction Services has won a new contract worth just short of £1/2 million, thanks to chemistry!

In a bid to continue the good work in improving its carbon footprint, Rohm and Haas in Jarrow has invested in a new boiler house, with the aim of closing down the existing two less efficient ones.

And Meldrum is now on site at the chemical manufacturing plant, constructing the galvanized steel portal framed boiler house with a brick-work clad envelope. The works also include concrete retaining walls and reinforced concrete tank farms.

The new structure will house equipment that produces steam, air and nitrogen much more efficiently than currently.

Jon Wall, Meldrum site foreman, said:

“After winning the job, we had to go through rigorous health and safety training to be allowed on site. As a company that follows our own health and safety carefully, it is a pleasure to work on such an organised plant and we have adhered closely to their regulations, working closely with health and safety co-ordinator, Michael Armstrong.

“As well as building the boiler house, since we have been on site we have helped Rohm and Haas with a number of other jobs, and are delighted to be on target to deliver a timely job, within projected costings.

Rohm and Haas is part of a global manufacturing company and was first established in Jarrow in 1955 to produce Ion Exchange Resins. The plant is now a complex of production plants, employing around 150, and manufacturing more than 20 different specialist chemical products.

Richard Moss, site manager of the Rohm and Haas Jarrow plant said:

“Meldrum were the only real choice to deliver our new boiler house. As well as having a strong safety record, they were competitively priced, experienced and able to deliver within our required tight timescale.

“Rohm and Haas continue to make a commitment to reduce our energy related emissions. Since 2000 we have reduced our CO2 release per tonne of product by 38%, and this is another significant step to improve upon this.”
