As part of this years Go Bananas appeal Meldrum took part in the CEO Wheelchair basketball challenge on Friday 19th June at the Metro Centre.
The aim is not only to raise money for sports wheelchairs but also to give the participants an idea of what the children’s lives are like being in a wheelchair.
Clare Savory, events manager, said: “Well done to all the teams that took part and congratulations to Meldrum Construction on winning the competition.
The money will then be spent on specialist equipment to change the lives of 10 North East disabled children and hundreds more through the Percy Hedley Sports Academy.
Four teams took part in the wheelchair basketball matches, representing intu Metrocentre, sister shopping destination intu Eldon Square, Meldrum Construction Services and Durham Cricket Club, and more than £1,000 was raised through entry fees and the generosity of spectators.
”Meldrum are proud to have taken part in The Sunshine Fund’s Wheelchair Basketball Challenge. We turned up to the Metro Centre with very little training and felt sure we would make fools of ourselves. There were times we could not catch or shoot the ball for laughing so much but would you believe it – WE WON!! A fantastic event that will no doubt have turned a few heads on a busy Friday afternoon in the Metro Centre. Our thanks go to our worthy opponents: Intu Metro Centre, Intu Eldon Square and Durham Cricket Club for their competitive spirit and helping to raise awareness and money for such a worthy charity”.
